For the love of the moon, the mountains and being outside

Right now sunrise is 8:14 a.m. and sunset is 4:42 p.m.

And the sun is on its low southern arc so dawn and dusk are short.

I feed Emmett his supper about 3:45 and then we head out at 4:15 so we have a good, long time for a last daylight walk and play time.

Today, it started gray and foggy.

It snowed.

By noon it cleared.

This evening was stunning: incredible light and including an 89% waxing gibbous moon rising as the sun was making a fiery descent.

Emmett, Auggie and I had made a loop and saw the moon. I only had my phone so beat feet to the house and got my big camera.

Back to the view points on the northeast edge of my property…

My favorite!

It was worth the back and forth. I enjoyed extra time with the beautiful views as well as extra time playing with Emmett on a gorgeous evening.

Super Moon: moon set

Sunday’s super moon was clouded out for me.

BUT Monday morning, as Bear and I took our sunrise walk… THE MOON appeared full and clear and still high in the sky.

We finished our walk and loaded up in the Jeep to head down the road and watch a super moon moonset.

To the west-south west of the road home and jeep location … pending sunrise.

Meanwhile, the moon drops lower and we watch…

The moonset and sunrise lit the mountains to the north and the trails of Whitefish Ski Mountain.

Just as the moon sets, the sun starts to rise behind the mountains and the clouds … and the rising sun lights clouds to the north…

Beautiful morning.

The full moon playing among the clouds

A full Winter moon shining on snow covered ground at night is like the poem says “a luster of midday to objects below”. I love walking in the woods at night with moon on the snow.

Last Friday night, the full moon added to the fun by playing among the clouds.

More snow

Sunday night and Monday morning it snowed to the tune of 10 inches of fresh, powdery snow.

The big ‘shoes came out to make plenty of walk paths for Bear, Auggie and me … and because I LOVE to snowshoe!

Auggie uses the paths, but also the snowless bits around the house and garage.

Bear used a path out to Beardog Point.

I also stomped down an area for the Beardog watch.

It has been a busy couple of days clearing snow, making the paths and generally enjoying the new snow. Temperatures have been warmer … in the mid-20’s F daytime.

Another arctic front has hit this evening and we are to be very cold again until the weekend.

St. Nick has come and gone, but even through clouds, the nearly full moon “on the breast of the new fallen snow, gave a luster of midday to objects below”!

Moon and Memory

I have a long time love affair with the moon.

My mother tells of me asking “Did you see the moon last night ?” And this was when I was 3 or 4 and knew where the hands of the clock were, but could not “say” the time. She recounts that I said the little hand was on the 2 and the big hand on the 3, i.e. 2:15 a.m. – or in that neighborhood of middle of the night. I apparently got up and looked at the sky.

I still do.

Often, my dog gets up with me and so we do a walk down the driveway in the wee hours of the morning.

Last night.

It was early evening, not the wee hours.

Still.

I love the moon and the stars and the dark, dark sky of the rural area where I live.

I especially love the winter sky and the moonlight and moonshadows when there is moonlight and snow.

Last night, as Bear and I took a before bedtime walk down the driveway, with the moon and the snow … it reminded me of a time when Karl and I chased the moon in winter.

Before there were neighbors to my East.

When Karl and I walked the “loop”.

One night, late Winter, full Moon: Karl waited patiently while I captured the moon over the mountains at twilight.

It is one of those times when memory is so distinct. I was new to manual photography and was working with a “point and shoot” and trying so hard to capture the beauty of that moon and the mountains. All the while, I was conscious of where Karl was and that he was waiting for me to continue our evening walk.

It was nearly 10 years ago.

The moon and the memory of Karl with me.

Exquisite.
