Scenes from a Snow day
I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 inches of snow fell. It was 30-31F on the ground so the snow compacted as it fell.
The new snow thrower … my neighbor called it my “mini-tank” and I like that!! – had a good time. I was plenty tired when done, but took the advice of the salesman and had an easier time this round. The track drive is great traction, it is also a bit more work turning when doing some of the tighter spots like around the mailbox. All in all, though, with the heavy snow I still got all done in 2 hours with a 20 minute break at the halfway point so not bad at all. (I did miss seeing the big yellow backhoe, though … such a cheery machine!)
The temperature started dropping about noon. I can hear the wind high in the trees, but it is from the NNE so at ground level, we are in a wind shadow from Jewell Basin. Being in the wind shadow is a good thing. It is to be very windy and very cold tonight and very cold until Thursday.
Bear, Auggie and I enjoyed a bit of outside time today while it was still relatively balmy.
Scenes from a Snow day follow. The bird is a nuthatch…Auggie had his eye on it, but got tired of sitting in the snow, thankfully!

That is quite deep snow. It’s a wonder Auggie can plough through it! I love it when it’s all white and fresh and beautiful! Stay warm!
Oh, Margaret – it is so funny to watch Auggie. Those first photos, I had not cleared the walk and he zig-zagged – trying to find a path, I think. He is very smart about using my boot prints or any cleared path when possible. After I cleared the walk, driveway and turn-around area, he stuck to those areas and under the motorhome. He LOVES to go out with Bear and I, but I did leave him inside when we went for walks in the woods. Between the deep snow and the tree avalanches, I didn’t think it was a good thing.
Does Bear like the snow? Our dog, Lucky, used to love it and play in it for hours. Mind you, it was rather a novelty, too, not an every day thing.
I think Bear has mixed feelings about snow – he likes to run in it…for a little while and then he runs inside to tend to his feet. I use some stuff called Musher’s Secret to help protect his feet, but he’s always been funny about getting his feet wet. Karl and Zack before him DID love the snow and Karl especially, did not want to come in. Karl played and stuck his face in the snow but I also think he liked being cool – he was larger and a thicker coat than Bear so I’m guessing Winter felt really good to him.
