We have sprung forward!
Yesterday (3/10/2024) was “Spring forward” in the U.S. … Clocks ahead for Daylight Saving Time.
While I wish we would do away with the whole time change thing … in the whole scheme of things, and with the way the U.S. political scene seems non-functional … not holding my breath!
For me it is a 5-minute update of the few devices, appliances and car that do not automatically update. As a long time “work from home” person, my relationship with the clock is to be on time for meetings and appointments. Otherwise, I eat when I am hungry, sleep when I am tired and go for walks when Emmett signals that it is time! We roll in sync with actual daylight/nighttime.
I will say that this year, Spring forward was very welcome. I fell on the ice a little over a week ago. Not really bad, but enough that some stiffness and soreness disrupted my sleep for the first 3 nights. And then … my sleep routine turned a bit upside down and for the last 4 days I have been going to bed 7:00 p.m. latest and so getting up 3-4:00 a.m.
After Springing forward, I find that I am on a more normal-ish schedule … not that it matters, but if I get up in the wee hours, Emmett gets up as well and I feel I need to get out with him … and 3-4 a.m. is kind of the witching hour for nighttime predator critters. I confess to being a bit more anxious after the mountain lion my security cameras caught at 2:30 a.m.-ish… BUT, I check the cameras, light Emmett and me up, turn on the outside lights and we go. My theory with lighting both of us up is twofold: we know where each other is AND we hopefully look strange to a lion or coyote, i.e. most prey for those critters do not have LED lighting!
I also throw the thought to the Universe that Emmett and I mean no harm … we respect and love all creatures.
So far, I have spent many hours in the woods at night with no problem and no fear (MOSTLY!)
Back to Spring Forward.
To celebrate, I made Spring Forward Sunday Sourdough Bagels – YEA!!!

I really wish the clocks wouldn’t keep changing. The EU was set to phase out the time change when Covid struck and now the lawmakers seem to have forgotten about it. We spring forward the last Sunday in March. N.Z. change their clocks a few weeks before us so sometimes they are 9 hours ahead, sometimes 10 and sometimes 11. Because of my lessons, I’m stuck to a timetable. My students laugh at me because I have a watch with hands! Now everything is digital, they can’t tell the time on the old-style clock or watch.
Quite rainy and cold here, not at all like spring. It is getting lighter in the mornings and evenings but as it’s so gloomy and cloudy it doesn’t really help. The Carnival started on Thursday and the first evening was rained out. Our Easter is 5 May this year and it’s known for being rainy so maybe we have a lot of rain to look forward to.
I hope you have recovered from your fall. Give the boys a pat and stroke from me.
I am often amazed that anything gets accomplished … not just government but overall! Between bickering and name calling and blaming … holy cow!
I think it was 2 years ago that I thought we (US) were actually going to abolish the time change but then “they” got stuck on whether to stay on DST or STD … honestly!!
The watercolor artists that I follow on YouTube are mostly in the UK and have snowdrops, daffodils and other spring flowers by now. No buds here and we did have some sun last weekend and maybe this weekend as well with rain and gray in between. Most of the snow is gone except piles from plowing and shoveling. At this point, I’d be happy if it was all gone as it is in that ugly and messy stage!
I am recovered … it wasn’t that bad, just that I got stiff at night and then woke up a lot.
Boys say thanks! I am so glad that Oscar remains a home boy … going outside but staying close to the house and away from the road. Plus, if I keep him in for weather, etc., he doesn’t mind.
Hope you get some sun and nice weather soon!
