From the front porch

Almost every day, I think how wonderful it is that there are no yellow jackets or any interfering bugs/flying things. Last Summer and even at this point of late Summer/early Fall …it was MISERABLE on the front porch and in the woods.

But this year…an absolute pleasure to be outside.

Even on the hottest days of this Summer, there were shady, cool spots to be found.

And now, that it is late Summer/early Fall – life is so good…

… from the front porch

Our Monday

Bear is fine, but we did have an unplanned trip to the vet.

Bear was running toward me and suddenly did a kind of half somersault, half roll and came up shaking his head violently.

Foxtails are everywhere and I check both Bear and Auggie’s ears as it is easy to get them out of the outer part…

By noon, Bear was still obviously uncomfortable and I couldn’t see anything so off we went.

It WAS a foxtail and it was so far in, they had to sedate Bear to get it out.

Between the heat (90F), anxiety and the sedative, Bear was done by the time we got home.

Auggie went out but he’s not a heat guy either and he was soon back in. He flops down just inside the door like he is so tired and hot that he just cannot go further.

Despite the hard day, Bear got up to check on Auggie.

That porcelain…it is nice and cool – that’s the next place Auggie goes to cool off.

I succumbed to a glass of wine or 2 and an early night!

Auggie waiting

When Auggie does not go on a walk with Bear and I, he is ALWAYS waiting for us to return…

I hurry to the front door and call Auggie. He comes outside and looks for Bear to return – usually from the front porch wood pile.

Auggie comes along on an ever longer mid-afternoon walk. He is doing very well! He is Mr. Sociable, loving to be wherever Bear and I are. I hope this continues. He does a bit of exploring on his own but never far from one of us and when we walk, if Bear runs to move deer off the property, Auggie stays with me.

Auggie is VERY aware of large birds. Although ravens pose no threat and eagles have passed over when we’ve been out, it is owls I worry most about. This morning (9:00 a.m.) when we were out a local rooster crowed – sounding maybe a bit owl-ish. Auggie jetted inside. Bear gets after large birds if they are around so if Auggie stays near, I know Bear will do his best to keep Auggie safe.

When Bear and I go out early morning or late evening, Auggie is not interested in going out in the dark. I love that he enjoys being out with us during the day but is happy to stay in at night. And I think that he is getting plenty of exercise so settles easily at bedtime.

Happy Friday!
