Eating from the garden: week 11

Raspberries!!! So good right off the bush and into my mouth!

There was a pint of raspberries in week 11’s garden bounty. I ate a few or so as I was washing them. I had a few in my before bedtime cereal and in my “get some food in my stomach” first thing in the morning cereal. And I grabbed a few every time I opened the frig.

And then there were none.

Sad, but true.

Elsewise, I continued as I have been: chard and kale and mushrooms sauteed on pizza, in scrambled eggs, over rice. Carrots and peas in pasta salad. Cilantro whizzed with tomatoes and green onions into pico de gallo. Basil whizzed with a bit of olive oil and frozen for winter pesto or ???. I shared some greens and carrots with my good neighbors and that was week 11 from the garden.

Other than food…a very full week which included motorhome maintenance (A/C and install of a new on board surge guard), dental surgery (canine tooth is gone and titanium implant in place awaiting healing and a brand new toof :)! ) and preparation for an assault on thistles, St. John’s Wort and a few other noxious weeds that have sprouted in unusual abundance in the woods :( …. AND a VERY full work schedule. All in all, a good and busy week. Bear, Bob and I are very much looking forward to a bit of relaxing this weekend after some necessary chores tomorrow (Saturday) – hopefully concluded by early afternoon.

Happy Friday and Happy Weekend to all of you from all of us.

But, what to me my love, what to me???

Yea, yea…the herbs go with my eyes…but…I notice there’s no catnip in there???

***Bob is not actually interested in catnip. My tuxedo cat, Gus (departed 8/14/2005) LOVED catnip…or more acurately, he went berserk over it and I think for him, it was a hallucinogen. Bob…no interest or reaction :)!

Pretzels for Bill

As told by my mother, ever since I posted the photo of my first pretzel, Bill has been saying that I have to make pretzels when I visit next. Bill typically does not say a thing just once :) !

Bill, I will happily make pretzels when I visit!! But here are a few more…in the name of perfecting the recipe and technique…

I was a grown up, middle aged adult when Bill became part of the family but he’s there with help and ideas when I need them, he was a professional photographer for a time and supports my photography plus gave me some beautiful books by Ansel Adams that I have learned from. He and my mother were foodies before that term was coined – and now we all enjoy sharing things we’ve learned, new things we try and cooking together when we can.

And he loves my Mama. So, pretzels for you, Bill, and Happy Father’s Day!

Love,
Liz, your wacky Montana step-daughter (that’s wacky, NOT wicked :)! )

Transition

Where did this weekend go???

One minute I was wrapping up the work week and the next, I am wrapping up the week end.

I DID get work a bit caught up. I have food and supplies for the coming week.

Bear, Bob and I had moments and time and stomach rubs and walks.

It rained, it was foggy…

and it was sunny!

The light. It is that time of year when the light changes so dramatically on its way from winter to spring to summer light.

From less than 8 hours of daylight we have moved to slightly more than 12 hours of light. Most days, Bear and I are out without the lighted collar/vest – with just the bandana.

The woods smells damp and new.

There are some sprouts of new things here and there.

It is the last week of March!

Transition.

Wrapping up the work week

It is Friday evening, 7:30 p.m. as I write this post. I’m done working for the day but will have a bit of a working weekend to catch up from some distractions this week. Still…it is Friday and even if I will be working, it is a different pace, a choice – weekend working. For now, it is Friday.

This week was a mixed bag of sun breaks, wintry squalls, spring snow, rain and fog. Tonight, after a wintry day, a small fire is going in the woodstove. A new recipe: Foodie with Family’s Cincinnati Chili provided a warm and comforting Friday supper. Bear and I had a lunch time walk at Wayfarer’s, Bob kept me company through the afternoon group work session. It was a good day at the end of a good week.

Last evening as the sun made an appearance…

Bob was out also…

And so was some blue sky.

Enjoying

So…Spring. Technically, it is Spring – for more than a day now. Montana did not get the memo, but then Montana rarely does. That is just one of the reasons that I love Montana :)!

Here, at my house, in northwest Montana, we have been under a winter storm watch/advisory/warning for the past 24 and now for the next 24. It has snowed and rained and snowed and rained. Montana Spring!

Today, Wednesday, I had a very productive morning. Bear and I took a long break at lunch for a run to town…necessary errands and a walk. Back to work after. Suppertime: Bear was napping in the bedroom, Bob was in the sunroom and I took a bit of a break to just be with Bob and enjoy the late afternoon.
