Hot and hazy

My day had a bit of flexibility in it and Bob was starting to run low on his prescription food so Bear and I made a morning run to Calm Veterinary in Kila, MT and had a morning walk on part of the “Rails to Trails” path that runs between Kila and Smith Lake …actually the north end of the Smith Lake Water Fowl preservation area.

Kudos to Bear…2 bicycles passed us just after I took this photo and he stayed where he was with no excitement or barking…on a loose lead. I hadn’t heard them. They are supposed to ring a bell or voice a warning… We’ve not been passed by bicycles on our walks so very pleased with Bear’s behavior.

It was a warm 70F when we walked. Clear overnight skies were giving way to haze as it warmed up.

Clouds were starting to pile up over the mountains…afternoon thunderstorms are forecast.

From the front porch

My UPS guy, Russ…he and I are both lovers of shorts. Russ has been my UPS guy for 9 years. We have an annual contest: who puts on shorts first and who abandons them last. It is on the honor system, i.e. true confessions!

Russ delivered a package last week in shorts. I was in long pants. It was also the first time Russ and Bear met. Russ loves animals and had tears in his eyes when I had to tell him about Karl. But when he met Bear and heard that story, he just kept saying: “I am so glad for you!” Then he stepped out of his truck, looked me in the eye and said, “It is past the middle of June and you are wearing long pants”…

Yep, I lost this year. He was in his shorts and I was in long pants. RATS!

From the front porch…in long pants.

Being

Sometimes we just sit and look at the mountains, listen to the wind in the trees – and just be.

Through the window: Alpenglow

After another clear, sunny day with pleasant upper 20’s temperatures, I sat down for my dinner at the kitchen table. It was the first meal of the day that I actually ate AT the table and not at my desk or catching as catch can between outdoor snow chores. Karl and Bob were at my feet. I took a moment to be thankful for the day and for them.

And then the mountain tops glowed pink. My camera was on the table. That bit of hot pink, through the window, with the snow covered trees. It was one of those perfect moments: framed in my mind as perfect as the scene was framed in the window.

Ann from Montana…that would be me

Hoo-rah!!!

The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond, was one of the first blogs I read and one that I still read regularly and especially her add-on Tasty Kitchen. Her photography section gave me motivation to step up my own photography and I learned a lot from her posts and tutorials. The tutorials were my introduction to Photoshop: my digital darkroom. Ree shares bits of her life with her husband and their 4 children on a working cattle ranch. In the last year she has published a cookbook, a children’s book and just released – her own love story and how she came to be “Pioneer Woman”. Although I’ve read the serial posts which the book expands on, I am just now enjoying the book: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels: a Love Story. If the stars align and the weather is ok, I will go to the Charlie Russell Art Show in Great Falls, Montana this March where she is to be for a book signing. I have the Kindle version of the book and don’t need her signature but hope to meet her and say in person how much I enjoy all that she shares.

I love to cook and good knives are a cook’s most used tool. I am thrilled that I won this set and look forward to years of good cooking with them, but the real thrill for me was seeing “Ann from Montana” on The Pioneer Woman blog. Ann from Montana…that would be me :)!
